“Should I take Engineering?“
This is perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions I receive from students and parents during career counselling sessions.
For decades, Engineering has been one of India’s most aspirational career choices. It represented stability, respect, and a pathway to a rewarding career. In many households, becoming an engineer wasn’t just an option—it was a matter of pride and a gateway to a better life.
But over years, the conversation has changed from not just gaining degrees, but about employment. The engineering preferences have changed. Employers have shared concerns about skill gaps. Artificial Intelligence, automation and advanced technologies have impacted almost every industry. Students and parents are naturally asking whether Engineering is still the right choice.
So, let’s answer a few important questions.
- Are there enough quality jobs for Engineering graduates?
- Will students graduating four years from now find meaningful opportunities in an AI-driven world?
- How can Engineering students bridge the skill gap and become industry-ready rather than simply earning a degree?

Engineering by the Numbers
Engineering continues to be one of India’s largest professional education streams. India has 8876 Engineering Colleges, of which 6611 are private and 2265 are government establishments, making it one of the world’s largest engineering education ecosystems. Some of the country’s premier engineering institutions include:
23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 25 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)
Along with these are hundreds of Government Engineering Colleges, State Universities and Private Engineering Institutions.
Engineering clearly isn’t disappearing. The ecosystem remains one of the largest in the country. Approximately 1.5 million engineers join the workforce annually.
But Are Engineering Colleges Closing?

Does this mean Engineering has become irrelevant? Absolutely not.
According to AICTE, 58 engineering colleges were approved for closure, while 950 engineering programs were discontinued. AICTE is the statutory national-level apex advisory body and regulator overseeing programs in technology, architecture, pharmacy, and management, and is responsible for maintaining quality education, infrastructure, and standards. AICTE orders the closure of institutions for several reasons, such as low student admissions, lack of faculty, non-compliance in operations, or inability to maintain infrastructure.
Students are now more aware and selective. They want quality education. They look beyond the degree. They evaluate based on quality of education, faculty, infrastructure, placements, industry exposure and alumni outcomes.
The Competition is Intense

In 2026, over 2.6 million cumulative student appearances were recorded across India’s largest national and postgraduate engineering entrance exams. This is driven by massive participation in Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE Main) and the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Despite concerns surrounding Engineering, the numbers clearly show that it continues to be among the most preferred career choices in India.

Outside of national statistics, state-level and institute-specific exams see an additional several hundred thousand overlapping student attempts:
- VITEEE & BITSAT: Consistently draw between 200,000 and 250,000 applicants each.
- State CETs (MHT CET, KCET, TNEA, WBJEE): Collectively account for over 600,000 candidates seeking state-funded college seats. [4, 5, 6, 7]
Which Engineering Branches Are Students Choosing?
Interestingly, not all Engineering branches are equally popular today. The most sought-after branches include: Computer Science & Engineering, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Data Science, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Robotics & Automation.
Traditional branches such as Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering continue to play a critical role in India’s infrastructure and manufacturing sectors. However, many students are increasingly gravitating towards digital technologies due to perceived career opportunities, higher salaries and global demand.
Interestingly, recent admission trends also suggest a gradual revival of interest in some core engineering disciplines at premier institutions, driven by India’s infrastructure growth, manufacturing expansion and semiconductor initiatives.
But What About Jobs for Engineers?
The India Skills Report 2026 paints an interesting picture of the future job market. Technology, BFSI, Renewable Energy, and Healthcare are expected to be among the leading hiring sectors in FY 2026–27. The IT industry alone anticipates a 35% increase in fresher hiring. Yet, while opportunities are growing, so is the skills gap. Demand for AI and Machine Learning talent has grown by nearly 600%, but qualified professionals remain in short supply. Similarly, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and practical coding skills continue to be among the most sought-after—and hardest-to-find—competencies.
The challenge today isn’t the availability of engineering jobs, but the bigger challenge is employability.
What Employers Want?
This is perhaps the most important question every aspiring engineer should ask.

The underlying problem is prominent. It is not a dearth of jobs but a skill gap.
Many employers believe graduates require additional training before they become industry-ready. Today’s employers increasingly look for graduates who can: Solve problems, Learn quickly, Work with AI tools, Build real-world projects, Communicate effectively, Collaborate across teams, Adapt to changing technologies
Notice something? Very few of these are about marks. The industry wants engineers who can apply knowledge—not just remember it. In today’s hiring landscape, a degree gets you shortlisted. Skills get you hired.
What Should Engineering Students Do?
If you’re planning to pursue Engineering, here are a few practical suggestions.
- Build Projects: Your portfolio often speaks louder than your CGPA.
- Intern Early: Real-world experience matters.
- Learn AI: Regardless of your branch, AI will influence your profession.
- Improve Communication: Technical knowledge is valuable. Being able to explain ideas is equally valuable.
- Participate: Hackathons, Competitions, Research and Open-source projects. These experiences make you stand out.
- Keep Learning: Engineering is one of those professions where learning never truly stops.
Engineering is No Longer One Career
Perhaps the biggest mindset shift students need today is this: Engineering is not the destination. It’s the foundation.

Final Thoughts
So, Is Engineering losing its sheen? Absolutely, not.
Engineering remains one of the most exciting careers for students who enjoy solving problems, building solutions and creating impact. What has changed is the expectation.
Twenty years ago, an Engineering degree often guaranteed opportunities. Engineering offers a strong foundation—but students must complement it with skills, practical experience and continuous learning to become successful in their career.
